FMJ vs. Hollow Points

Writer's picture: Mike PettengillMike Pettengill

There’s lots of different types of ammunition. But the two largest categories are full metal jackets and hollow point rounds. Full metal jackets, also called FMJ, or more typically considered to be practice rounds. Full metal jackets, also called defensive rounds, are typically considered to be for self-protection. FMJ’s are typically less expensive than hollow point rounds. When shooting paper or cardboard targets, both rounds will do roughly the same thing. When shooting biological targets, FMJ’s have a better chance of over penetrating the target. On biological targets, a hollow point round will inflict more damage and they have a higher probability of stopping inside the target.
