To purchase a firearm in California, you must first have a firearms safety certificate. You can acquire a firearm safety certificate by taking a 30 question firearms safety test at most any gun store. Once you passed the test you can purchase firearms and ammunition for up to five years. After you select and purchase your firearm, the gun store will run a background check confirming you are not a prohibited person. You will wait 10 days and then you can return and pick up your firearm.
