Keep Your Finger Off The Trigger

Writer's picture: Mike PettengillMike Pettengill

One of the most important safety rules is to keep your finger off the trigger. It is one of the most important safety rules, yet it is one of the most frequently violated. If you ignore all the other safety rules, but you keep your finger off the trigger, everyone is going to be safe. You only need to have your finger on the trigger when you pointed in and on target. That's it. When you are at the ready, finger off the trigger. When you come out of the holster, finger off the trigger. When you go back into the holster, finger off the trigger. A firearm is just not going to go off by itself. So, if your finger is off the trigger, you will not accidentally shoot yourself or someone else. When you pull a firearm out of your purse or shoulder bag, and return it to your purse or shoulder bag, keep your finger off the trigger. If you get flustered or confused, just keep your finger off the trigger and everything will be just fine.
