Can you open carry a handgun in California? Yes, if the sheriff or police chief in a county of less than 200,000 people allows you to, you may open carry in that jurisdiction. Should you open carry? We don’t think so. The purpose of open carry is to show the world you’re not the guy to be messed with. However, the end result is open carry tells the bad guy you’re the one who should be shot first. We prefer concealed carry. We don’t want the world to know we are dangerous until we want them to know.
